Selfie in Jahaly
“The trip was the best experience that I have done in my life so far!”, that is what Marie Kleebolte says about her trip to The Gambia. The 18-year-old high school graduate was part of our group that visited Jahaly Health Centre in May. “It was very touching, to see the other side of the world, and amazing how a flight of six hours only makes a difference. The best part was the reception in Jahaly. The people have given us so much, even though they themselves do not have much! ”
The trip with 17 friends and supporters of Project Aid the Gambia was held from May, 21st to 29th, 2016.
The group visited the state health centre of Kudang. There they saw with their own eyes the desolate state of the health station near Jahaly: no drugs, no patients, miserable facilities, lack of hygiene. In contrast, their visit to Jahaly Health Centre was encouraging: clean rooms, newly renovated buildings, sufficient staff and drugs – and many patients. Up to 300 patients per day come to Jahaly Health Centre for seeking medical treatment. The reception of the group when approaching the clinic has impressed all who joint the trip:

Im Dorf Jahaly
“Four years ago I have been to The Gambia for the first time, but this year’s trip was really incredible. The reception of the people of Jahaly was just sensational. A feeling that you just can not describe. Jahaly Health Centre is in a absolutely top condition, and we know that all donations go to the good cause directly. ” (Kevin Arndt)
The highlight of the trip was the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Jahaly Health Centre. Even for visitors who have been to Jahaly before: “I found this time the feeling was most intensely, we felt very welcome and together we make a difference. For me it is unbelievable what the people of Jahaly and Madina have given to us.” (Gerdi Binder, lifeguard)
This all will remain unforgettable for the members of the group: the visit to the compounds in Jahaly and the talking with the people there, the night in the bush hotel Janjanbureh camp on the banks of the Gambia River, the good mood in the group – and of course the days on the Gambian beaches.

“The best thing about this trip certainly was the composition of the group. In addition, the visit to Jahaly Health Centre and the overnight stay at the bush hotel!! Finally, also our beach party!” (Stefan Schmidt, CEO Erzet GmbH)

On the way back to the coast, the tour group made a stopover in Njaba Kunda. In the village at the north bank of the Gambia River Project Aid The Gambia in 2011/2012 has demolished state run Njaba Kunda Health Centre and rebuilt it as a model clinic in 2011/2012.
“The impressions of Jahaly Health Centre in the bush clinic have made the journey into an experience that is not to beat for me!” (Paul Breuer, Student)

Produktion von Moringa-Seife
In the compound of the project’s Main Office in Manjai Kunda near the Gambian capital city Banjul, the group helped in the production of soap from Moringa oil. From this autumn the products of the project’s own Moringa plantation in Jahaly are to be sold through www.buschklinik.de. The proceeds will go to 100 percent in the projects. The plantation and the production of Moringa products create jobs in Jahaly and should contribute to the long-term and sustainable preservation of the projects in Jahaly.
“Thank you all for this great week! There was not a single highlight – the entire week was a highlight: the pool days, dinner, visit to Jahaly, the celebration in Jahaly, the overnight stay at the bush hotel, the visit to the craft market, the soap production, the Gin-night, the spectacular beach with wrestling … and always with all of us together !!! ” (Ludwig Kleebolte, art gallery owner)
More impressions of travel participants:
“There were so many different “best” experiences in The Gambia. I was impressed most of the reception in Jahaly looking to the many hundreds of happy faces. In addition, the last day on the spectacular beach was another highlight indeed. Overall, I will never forget this trip, also thanks to our sensational group. Thank you very much ! ” (Bastian Schmidt, physiotherapist)
“Each individual experience itself was so special! The time will remain unforgettable for me.” (Hannah Kleebolte, university student)
“An all around successful trip. Great people, both our group as well as the ones we were privileged to meet there. I for sure will be with you again for the 30th anniversary.” (Petra Kleebolte, special education teacher)
For end of January 2017, Project Aid The Gambia organizes the next trip to our projects in The Gambia. One of the highlights of the trip will be the reception of the drivers of our 2017’s humanitarian convoy, when the drivers arrive with two minibuses from northern Germany after their 6,500 km long journey in Jahaly to personally hand over donations from Germany to Jahaly Health Centre.
